Well, I managed to tough out a whole weekend working with a broken toe. I can’t believe I did it. I was trying to pull a stretcher with a patient on it and it got stuck on a cord so I pulled harder and it went over the cord and then over my right baby toe :(( I have done this many times and never broke anything before lol At least it was a slow weekend. Not like the weekend before. Ohhhh i guess I didn’t get to tell that story because I wasn’t writing this blog then lol silly me.

March 24th was the truama surgery night from hell. At 1:00am we got our first trauma page of the night. I responded to the ER to check out the patient for possible surgery. If the patient is in emminent danger of losing their lives I will make the call according to the patients injuries which operating room we will go to.. the regular truama room or the heart room. A man came in with 1 stab wound to the chest. after a few minutes of tests it was determined his heart had been hit. we took him to the heart room, but when we moved him over to the operating room bed his heart stopped. the trauma surgeon open the left side of his chest (between the ribs) while i started chest compressions. I gave him open cardiac massage. While the surgeon had his finger in the heart’s hole plugging it. His hands where too big to fit them both in but i could get my hand in around his to pump the heart. It is a wonderful feeling to feel the heart twitch in your hand and then start beating.

Well, about this time another man shot himself in the chest (his girlfriend dumped him) hitting his heart. by this time the heart surgeon on call is in the hospital and he brings this guy up before our back team arrives. (the back up crew is allowed 30 minutes to respond.) This happened in about 20 minutes. The surgeon sewed up the hole of the stabbing vicitms heart with 2 stitches (skinny knife blade) and he started to do much better so we closed his chest and sent him to ICU.

My crew then went to help the other crew to see what else needed to be done. The heart surgeon sewed up the heart and after the guy was closed his heart stopped. I was closest to his chest so I started chest compression. We gave him 1 shock with the paddles and he came back wheeeew

Believe it or not both of these guys are still alive and the stabbing victim even went home well… actually prison this weekend. He had warrants for his arrest. The GSW(gunshot wound) is still in the hospital but out of ICU.

My boyfriend (a cop) was standing outside the door while i was working on the stabbing guy. He said he saw me stick my hand in the guy’s chest. lol he looked pretty grossed out telling me what he saw me doing. We have not been dating for very long and he is still getting used to what I do for a living lol

I’m soooo happy this weekend was quiet. I could never have done that with a freshly broken toe.
